We’re in the tree and hedge planting season and now could be the right time to get something in the ground.
When the trees and hedging plants are out of their dormant period [November to March] then they need to be in the ground or a container. Bare root plants are simply those not in the ground or container.
Paul King from King and Co nursery at Rayne, Braintree, Essex says:
There are several different types of hedges such as wildlife or native. A lot of hedges are used to keep stock in, so we like to have something like hawthorn as a main constituent because that gives the hedge body.”

Paul King from King and Co nursery at Rayne, Braintree, Essex spoke to Ken Crowther about tree planting and hedging plants.
Paul says that demand for UK produced seed has now increased due to biosecurity considerations and he says his nursery is trying to use almost exclusively UK grown seed.
Paul King says we do import whips [a small growing hedge plant]:
We start off with a seedling, which is a seed that is grown for a year in the field. It’s then been transplanted for a second year – That’s a transplant. So, that’s two years old and is usually 40 to 60 centimetres in height. That can be lifted from the field and planted straight out into a hedgerow.”
Tree disease and pests (2024)
Pest and diseases of trees come under the spotlight, – the elm tree has almost totally disappeared from the English countryside due to pest and disease over the past 40 years, Paul King discusses with Ken Crowther some of the other challenges ahead for trees.
