Each year Peter Beales Roses try to launch a new rose at the Chelsea Flower Show and this year will see the debut of ‘Ashton Wold’.
A radiant yellow shrub rose, Ashton Wold features soft, buttery-yellow blooms with an appealing fragrance and an elegant, shrub habit. Specially bred with pollinators in mind, this insect-friendly rose is a haven for bees and other beneficial insects, making it as good for the garden as it is for the environment.
Ian Limmer, nursery manager in Norfolk says that they grow more than 3,000 rose plants in the glasshouses to get around 1200 that are ‘good enough’ for the stand at Chelsea.
He says:
All the time we’re getting people ask about repeat and continuous flowering, so that you can get as much value as possible. But we must not forget some of the once flowering species, such as the gallicas or portlands or albas, when they do come out for four or five weeks they’re stunning.
‘Ashton Wold’ was the family home of Charles Rothschild (1877–1923), a pioneering naturalist and early advocate for wildlife conservation. A member of the prominent Rothschild family, Charles dedicated much of his life to the study and protection of Britain’s natural habitats.
In 1912, he founded what would later become The Wildlife Trusts and proposed the UK’s first network of nature reserves. His passion for biodiversity is still felt today, and Ashton Wold itself remains a treasured site for wildlife and ecological preservation.
Ashton Wold will be available to order online and at the Peter Beales nursery from May 2025 following its Chelsea debut.
