West Street Vineyard in East Anglia

White grapes on the vine in a vineyard.

Essex is one of the warmest areas in England and the West Street Vineyard in Coggeshall is famous for its English grapes.

The dry East Anglian climate is an advantage for growing as much fruit for wine production as the small vineyard possibly can.

West Street produces grapes for all sorts of vineyards across England, as Jane Mohan told Ken Crowther.

Climate changing for improved grape growing

Temperatures are increasing around the globe and that is having an impact on the UK’s weather. The south east and east of England regions are starting to see a boom in vineyards and wine production due to conditions now being more reliable and warmer.

In 2023, the UK had over 1,000 vineyards registered for the first time and 4,209 hectares under vine, a 123 per cent increase from 10 years earlier according to the Food Standards Agency Wine Team and DEFRA.

The county of Kent has the largest area of planted vines in the UK with 1,031 hectares. That is equivalent to around 2,470 football pitches!

Trade body, WineGB says that sales of English and Welsh sparkling wines have risen 187 per cent since 2018, from 2.2m bottles to 6.2m in 2023.  Meanwhile, sales of still wine have increased by 117 per cent over the same period, from 1.2m to 2.6m bottles.
