It’s time to pick and store the stone-fruits and it is interesting to see that the Tiptree growing season extends right into autumn.
Stone fruit season (2014)
Victoria plums and greengages are starting to be picked. once old variety grown at Tiptree is the Cambridge Gage with a beautiful flavour. However, timing is key and weather conditions need to be just right for picking the greengage.
Anton Thurgood, farm commercial manager from Wilkin & Son describes the effects of rain on the fruit crop. Luckily most of the strawberries are grown under tunnels.
A new variety of strawberry called ‘Triumph’ is being trialled by the team and the berry has been cropping throughout the summer. Anton says this plant will continue to produce until October.
