Ken talks with Anton Thurgood, farm commercial manager from Wilkin & Son about the importing of bees in boxes to pollinate the crop of strawberry plants.
He says there has been changes over the time he’s been with the business including the introduction of coir as a growing media for the strawberries.
Apricots in tunnels are a recent addition for Wilkin & Sons Ltd.
Spanish poly tunnels that have been designed specifically for cherries and apricots and these allow for the sides to be lifted up and pollinators can get at the blossoms.
Mick Lavelle, senior lecturer in landscape management at Anglia Ruskin University, Writtle Campus also looks at the importance of insects to bird populations.
