Q: I have a potted French lavender bush and when I saw your video on lavender recently I was dismayed to then compare the screen plants with my old mess of a bush. How do I prune my plant to form a lovely, rounded ball and get this back in-line? Josie from Southend-on-Sea
A: Lavender, it looks as if it’s been in that pot for a year or two without any pruning [correct]. I would cut down to 6 inches add a layer of compost and hope! This is high risk as plants do not like hard pruning. Preferably start again and buy a nice compact Lavender, NOT a French one, although pretty – French lavender is not as easy or hardy. Plant in a good compost preferably a John Innes No.3, doesn’t lay as wet and lavender likes dry.
When Lavender finishes flowering: cut-off dead flowers and lightly trim into the soft growth never into woody growth .
So really I’d just start again! Hope this helps, Ken
