Vegetable plot – April

Onions growing in a vegetable plot.

Andrew Tokely from Kings Seeds talks about some of the jobs he’s been doing at the end of March and into the beginning of April.

Traditionally in the UK, vegetable growers should wait until after the FA Cup Final in mid-April as this often signals the last of the late frosts.

Andrew talks about looking after and preparing soil on an allotment with a chrome.

Growing leeks and onions from seed (2021)

Andrew Tokeley chats with Ken Crowther about sowing onions and leeks. Andrew says that around April he will put the onion seedlings in a cold frame to get the plants ready for planting outdoors.

Traditionally, Andrew has grown Bunton’s Showstopper onions but has now moved to Globo variety. Leeks are normally sown in April for eating in winter.

Andrew says:

Always try and prick them out as they’re just past the loop stage. When an onion comes up like a hair pin and just as that’s starting to open – like a little elbow – that’s when you should prick them out.
