When to lift begonias

Pink and apricot begonia blooms.

Q: Dear Ken, I need your help! This year is the first time that I have had begonias for my pots and baskets and I have about 60 odd in number. The varieties are apricot shades, inferno and illuminations. The begonias are still blooming and I don’t know whether I should be lifting them now to overwinter them or whether I should leave them for a while and keep watering. It seems a shame to have to lift the begonias and cut off all the blooms and foliage. What should I do? Your early reply would be much appreciated. Thank you in anticipation. Heather from Great Bromley

A: I always wait for the frost to zap the foliage and flowers before taking the begonias up. Then I dry the corms slightly outside then keep frost free until totally dry after which you can store in nets or even dry peat or shavings. Hope this helps.
