Tiptree – June

Strawberries are ripe and ready to pick as they hang down from table tops.

The strawberries start to ripen in the field and picking can begin. June really is the sweetest month to be in the garden!

Strawberry picking season (2014)

Anton Thurgood, farm commercial manager from Wilkin & Son, is finally in full season for picking strawberries.

Thirty-five tonnes of strawberries are expected to be picked from the single field that Ken and Anton are standing in.

Traditionally Tiptree holds the strawberry race each year to pick Little Scarlet strawberries. It’s very difficult to manage this variety as it can deflate within the day.

Mick Lavelle, senior lecturer in landscape management at Anglia Ruskin University, Writtle Campus says June is when plants do most of their growing.

Ken catches up with farms director, Chris Newenham and talks to him about little scarlet, – a variety of strawberry grown by Wilkin & Sons Ltd for more than 120 years.

Tiptree jams and preserves can be purchased widely from supermarkets or direct online by clicking here.
