It’s a busy time of the year for market gardener Andrew McTurk from Calcott Hall Farm in Brentwood as customers start to buy their Christmas trees. Andrew has some recommendations on how to keep your tree looking good for the whole of the festive season.
Potatoes have been a big crop this year at Calcott Hall Farm near Brentwood. The crop has now been harvested and gone into store. However, the potato market is quite challenging for producers as there is a surplus of potatoes making prices low.
As well as presenting the weather on TV, presenter Steve Weston also runs a farm in Suffolk. The one hundred acre site north of Ipswich was being rented, however they have since taken the land back and will farm it themselves. Ken Crowther met Steve in the polytunnel to find out more.
Ken Crowther joins Andrew McTurk at Calcott Hall Farm and discusses the seasons vegetables. The cold nights signal the end of the beans, however, some crops like pumpkins benefit from a drop in temperature helping them to ripen.
Andrew McTurk from Calcott Hall Farm grows fruit and vegetables commercially on the 100 acre Brentwood site. Andrew thinks that 2014 has probably been one of the best growing years he can remember despite the poor start to the year.
